A thought
One of my earliest and most enthusiastic subscribers here,
shared a book of her beautiful poetry with me. This one especially caught my ear.Nothing
It occurred to me today
it did
if i did nothing
And faded far far away
But just did nothing
the outcome would be the same
as
doing everything
There is something about my new worldview. The one that I am slowly growing inside me, that knows this to be true. We have spent our whole lives striving, working, reaching, competing, building. The outcomes have been uneven, unfair and counterintuitive - how did all that striving lead us here?
I think part of turning to a world of kinder possibility is to let go. To embrace our insignificance and be humble. In humility, we can see ourselves as tiny ants in a cosmic whorl. We can let go of the hubris and disappointment of the drive to “Save the Planet”. On quiet days, I sometimes wonder if it is, in fact, the planet that is saving us. Reminding us to notice what is really important and to respond with love in every tiny way we can.
Thank you, Anna, for sharing your poem with us!
Glimmers and sparks*
My glimmers for today are:
A rainbow in the early morning cloud.
A sneaky before-school outing with my youngest.
My partner cooking a delicious dinner. We take turns cooking, week on, week off. There is always a little jolt of joy when it is not my week!
Li’l bean is your reminder to pause and ask: What are your glimmers for today?
From your friend and your small, steadfast companion,
*Drawing Li’l Bean helped me navigate out of a period of depression in 2023. A good friend 13, 595km away, helped, too, through a ritual of swapping daily glimmers via text.
A glimmer is a tiny spark of hope, enthusiasm or joy that lifts your heart. By helping me find three glimmers each day, she gently helped me see the joy and beauty already around me.
I’d like to share this practice with you and invite you to reflect on your glimmers for the day when you read this. Think of Li’l Bean as a reminder to notice the glimmers and sparks in your life. We’d love it if you would like to share your glimmers in the comments.
Love these thoughts and the poem and illustration!
The planet is saving us . As I drove along a busy road this morning, I thought how miraculous that the earth enables us to breathe , despite all we do to it. Thanks for beautiful poem and thoughts. 🧡
