A thought
The world is a lot right now eh?
I have a feeling of tiredness and overwhelm that is asking new things of me - the tools and habits I had developed to cope with metacrisis version 2023 are feeling inadequate; version 2025 is a whole new ball game.
Something is asking me to slow down - winter perhaps?
I’m going with the feeling, I’m going to allow myself to hibernate a little. Pull up the doona, post less, prioritise rest and trust the composting process. So while you might not hear from me as often in the coming weeks, I am still tending the spark, it’s just hiding under the doona for a bit, trusting that some things grow best in the dark.
What is this season asking of you?
Glimmers and sparks*
My glimmers for today are:
Quiet chai tea and a moment to post this before the day speeds up.
I went to the Canberra TEDx open mic night yesterday - enjoyed hearing lots of big ideas and having dinner with my son.
Earl Grey scones my daughter made - yum!
Li’l bean is your reminder to pause and ask: What are your glimmers for today?
From your friend and your small, steadfast companion,
*Drawing Li’l Bean helped me navigate out of a period of depression in 2023. A good friend 13, 595km away, helped, too, through a ritual of swapping daily glimmers via text.
A glimmer is a tiny spark of hope, enthusiasm or joy that lifts your heart. By helping me find three glimmers each day, she gently helped me see the joy and beauty already around me.
I’d like to share this practice with you and invite you to reflect on your glimmers for the day when you read this. Think of Li’l Bean as a reminder to notice the glimmers and sparks in your life. We’d love it if you would like to share your glimmers in the comments or by hitting reply (if you don’t like sharing publicly).
Thanks for reading Spark in the Dark!

Oh Li’l Bean, I felt this in my bones. The composting, the doona, the quiet trust in things unseen—yes.
What is this season asking of me?
To stay close to the kettle.
To let the inbox rot a little.
To tell the truth, slowly.
To stop trying to make sense of a world mid-molt.
Your words landed like a glimmer in a very grey moment. Thank you.
Happy hibernation, Gillian. Take good care of yourself. 🍲☕
