As a colonial export a few generations on it makes me sad that we have brutally damaged so much indigenous heritage as well as the links and threads of connection and belonging that our white ancestors once had to place. Yes, I can relate to your comment about there being too much going on. It's overwhelming. Change is on steroids and time is speeding up.
I agree, the Australian government's guidelines for AI are encouraging, but a clever move. It wins them some Brownie points from an electorate responding badly to data centres in Australia. IP is important to creatives, I get that but.... should it really be the focus on a dying planet?
Investors want to build 90 data centres in Australia and why wouldn't they when the government welcomes them with open arms and cheque books? We are a politically stable country and apparently we have the space. But we are also one of the most exposed continents to global heating - running out of water and our emissions are rising. Nobody seems to care about that - let alone the noise from these hideous things. No doubt the federal government sees data centres as a way to prop up a falling economy. Labor may as well be the LNP. Capitalism and unsustainable growth still reign.
Yes Michelle to all of the above - I don’t have a very high bar for a political glimmer! I am just relieved that at least we are talking about a coordinated approach. I agree the whole status quo palava is so out of touch with the real answers and I’m not sure what it takes to get us to a communal tipping point but I suspect AI data centres might have a galvanising role.
You could be right. I hope so! Communities are definitely speaking out. It's what has to happen. People need to get involved instead of passively accepting things.
